Association of Friends of the Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut first awards research prizes

Insel Riems, 05 June 2012.  At the occasion of its annual meeting of members held today at the Jena site  of the Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut, Federal Research Institute for Animal Health (FLI), the Association of Friends of the Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut has first awarded research prizes to young scientists of the institute. This year’s prize winners are Dr. Tariq Abbas, Dr. Britta Möhl and Dr. Anne Wegelt. Dr. Abbas from Lahore, Pakistan, wrote his dissertation in veterinary medicine in the frame of a stipend of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) at the Institute of Epidemiology of the FLI in Wusterhausen. His research subject was the epidemiology of avian influenza (“bird flu”) in Pakistan. Subject of the dissertations in natural sciences of Dr. Möhl and Dr. Wegelt was the molecular analysis of agriculturally important viruses. Dr. Möhl investigated  Aujeszky’s disease virus of swine at the Institute of Molecular Biology, Dr. Wegelt examined the causative agent of bovine viral diarrhea at the Institute of Diagnostic Virology. The research work of all three prize winners was published in internationally renowned journals, which is one of the pre-conditions for qualifying to the award. Each of the prizes comes with a 500 Euro grant.

As of this year, the research prizes of the Association of Friends of the Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut will be awarded annually for outstanding diploma theses or dissertations which, in addition to receiving a very good assessment, have also resulted in at least one publication in an internationally renowned journal. The prizes are intended to support the advancement of young FLI scientists. The candidates are nominated by the head of the responsible FLI institute and are chosen by the executive committee of the Association of Friends of the FLI. Prizes are awarded at the occasion of the Association’s annual meeting of members traditionally held in June.
