A reliable differentiation of identified IHNV or VHSV isolates by means of the monoclonal antibodies available so far is often impossible. In contrast, a molecular biological characterization (genotyping) including phylogenetic analysis permits a clear differentiation.
Phylogenetic analyses carried out promptly after the outbreak of a disease support and facilitate the clarification of the course of events. Thus, genotyping and phylogenetic analyses contribute considerably to a better understanding of the distribution of IHNV and VHSV isolates.
