„Veterinary Journal“ prize for FLI doctoral student

As announced recently by the international scientific journal „The Veterinary Journal“, Dr. Judith Wagner, former doctoral student at the Institute of Molecular Pathogenesis of the Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut has been awarded the Junior Scientist Prize 2011 together with her co-authors. The prize has been awarded for her article on the consequences of an infection with PRRS virus which causes porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome in pigs. The virus can affect the general health condition of the animals and cause reproductive disorders in sows. In piglets and weaner pigs pulmonary and respiratory dysfunction predominates. The latter was investigated and characterized in detail in Ms Wagner’s research work by means of modern pulmonary function tests. The results of the investigations provide profound pathophysiological insights into the respiratory disorders caused by the PRRS virus and their consequences for the diseased animal.

The prize-winner is chosen by the journal’s editors who consider the papers published in the journal during the calender year. The prize is in the form of books to the value of approx. 300 Euros.
